The algorithmically determined city council doesn’t represent the actual people in any way. Donald Trump - detested, reviled in Portland - got more votes in District 1 than any city councilor. No one would think that less than 30% Trump vote share reflects majority will or a reliable cross section of voters - so why do we let them act like Candace Avalos does? The system was designed and shaped by the people who benefit from the system. It’s low scale tyranny.
All I can say is HEAVEN help Portland: This is the groups agenda and now that you people voted for them I hope you'll be happy with the results. 🤨
“united as allies” to advance shared values. Among them: economic, racial, and climate justice, support for the working class, and police accountability.
Definition: Move money from the perceived wealthy to the poor, non-working class and homeless, hire more people of diverse nationalities regardless of skill, require more money from corporations to pay for their radical climate change agenda including 15 minute cities then use the money as their slush fund for their personal pet projects, make the police feel even more unappreciated and hopefully many more will quit. Support for the working class is a joke. More and more taxes levied against the corporations and business owners will only be passed on to the working class. However, they don't fit into this category anymore because they are making $133K a year so none of these changes will affect them. Hope you folks understand what you have created. 🙄
Wow. I’m a recent immigrant to Portland (2019) and I continue to be astounded by the power and influence of the commies here. Where are the normies? Isn’t there an organized business community that advocates for public safety? Etc.
This is the result of what can only be called a coup by Julia Meier and the radical members of the city charter commission--working for two years (Covid/Floyd times) without any media scrutiny to ensure that radicalism and minorities would govern Portland for at least another ten years. Read the "Progress Reports" (buried on the city's website--https://www.portland.gov/charter-review-commission/key-documents-and-information--
and you'll note that guaranteeing minority hegemony is in the works from the get-go.
As DX says below, the voting system is designed to favor small, highly organized, cultish groups (Democratic Socialists, anyone?) over the balance of middle-of-the-road mopes, who were baffled by the rank-choice system and lists of up to 30 candidates. Just as the charter commission designed it.
Legacy media in this town still won't deal with the reality of the system itself. And Julia Meier, who also "managed" the transition to the new government, is still busily at work in the city government...but god only knows what she's up to since she never is interviewed or responds to email. Never. Ever.
Portland turned into Gotham City. When I first moved there in 2015 it seemed like Portlandia, but even back then there was corruption going on at the highest levels and most insidious evil operating in the healthcare system.
The Legacy merger with OHSU is a stunning revelation of what they'll do to cover up their crimes. Like Batman, corruption in Portland began the same way, under the guise of philanthropy.

Great piece.

Well, the mopes voted for it. Happy decade!
